Description
After 50 Years, The New
Hongkonger and The Clues to the Future are the
three books in "Yip Kwok-wah's Series of Commentaries on
China's National Affairs", jointly published by Yew Chung
Publishing House and Chung Hwa Book Co., (HK). The series is
a compilation of Mr. Yip's talks delivered at a Radio Television
Hong Kong programme, After 50 Years, in 2007 and also
of his public speeches on various occasions.
After 50 Years and The Clues to
the Future are adapted from the 50 Years radio
talks. In the programme, Mr. Yip delivered in-depth analysis
to different issues that Mainland China, Hong Kong and the Taiwan
Straits facing. A learned intellectual with a wealth of life
experiences, Mr. Yip critically examined China's historical,
political and economical development, the international situations,
and China's ideological ambience and social changes. The talks
received a lot of feedback from members of audience from different
social strata. And some of his view points became talk of the
town. The compilers have checked the series against the authoritative
text, rearrange and supplement the contents with other material.
The New Hongkonger is a collection
of speeches by Mr. Yip at the "Student Ambassadors Seminar
2008" and on other public occasions. Addressed a wide variety
of audience, he discussed the related topics in simple language
and in a multi-dimensional way, and focused public opinion on the
topics.
The political and democratic development of
Hong Kong and Mainland China and changes in the global environment
has long been the concerns of Mr. Yip, an influential opinion leader
in the society. He puts forth the idea of a three-level identity--"the
Hongkonger, the Chinese, the Earth custodian" as a way to
position Chinese and Hong Kong people amidst the highly globalized
challenges of the 21st century. Hailing "home in Hong Kong
and the roots in the Earth", Mr. Yip encourages readers to
reach out for the world, understand their motherland, care about
Hong Kong and realize personal dreams.
The series discusses three main themes about
issues of Mainland China and Hong Kong:
After 50 Years: Examining the paradigm
shift of the Chinese civilization as the point of departure, the
book offers alternative readings to how the history of China affects
the economy, cultural growth and development in democracy of the
contemporary China. It also provides analysis to the Chinese contemporary
politics, the role of China in the international arena and the
interaction between Mainland China and Hong Kong.
The New Hongkonger: Taking into consideration
of the liberalization of China and globalization, the book examines
the strength of Hong Kong. With visionary observation, the author
writes to motivate young people to embrace their motherland, develop
and defend universal values such as democracy, human rights and
freedom, in face of the challenges brought by the new century and
new circumstances.
The Clues to the Future: A perceptive
analysis to the thirty years of China’s reform and liberalization,
her political and economic changes, the book elucidates the recent
ideological ambience and the social changes on the Mainland in
an attempt to project the prospects of the development of Mainland
China and Hong Kong.
All three books are prefaced by renowned scholars
from Hong Kong and the Mainland. Local established academics and
young scholars and professionals contribute response pieces to
the books in a manner in which readers are stimulated to think
in a multi-dimensional or even reversed way so that they can better
grasp the topics of discussion.
Easy-to-read and informative, the series will
serve as a set of practical information for senior secondary and
tertiary students and teachers to be used in national affairs and
general education.
